July 2014

ANN ARBOR VETERANS COUNCIL

Meeting: August 26, 2014 Time: 10:30 – Noon Room: 728

Minutes for July meeting and AGENDA

June meeting minutes accepted.

Phillip showed us the flyer for the Vet-to-Vet peer-support group he will start in the GI Clinic. Council gave suggestions and he will send me the improved flyer; I will email the flyer to Council Members to get final approval.

Linda said visitors from the Center for Clinical Management Research will come to our August meeting to observe how our Council works. CCMR is planning to start an advisory council. A focus group for means testing was completed and she will share information with us at our next meeting. There are four focus groups in the works – one in Toledo, another in Flint, a CLC group and a HOPTEL group will address room design improvements and expansion. WIFI is now operational. Planetree has a competition for the best patient-centered care programs; Ann Arbor VA submitted three programs and all three were awarded “Honorable Mention” – Linda and two other staff members will represent the three programs at the Planetree Conference in October. A computer/tablet check-out system for Veterans inside the medical center us being considered.

Paul J. brought our attention to the increase of Women Veterans receiving care in the VAAAHS. A recent study stated that they are 9.6% of the patients in 2014 and are expected to be 12.4% in 2020 and 17.7% by 2040. A Women’s Conference will take place in the Dearborn Heights VFW in November. Paul J., Gary B., and Mark L. talked about their volunteer work in the Buddy-to-Buddy program. Gary explained the “Buddy One” training for all ranks (including officers). This is a “common sense” approach to improve communication skills so the unit members can receive help and support. It will work by raising awareness within the unit so problems can be detected early and be dealt with in a respectful way using programs, treatment, and resources.

Jon L. said he recently was authorized to receive care from a doctor outside of the VA system. We had an open discussion about outside referrals. The Vet and the caregiver must pay close attention to details. The process must be done correctly and the paperwork must be done properly.

Council began the discussion about stigma and we will continue it during our next meeting.
